The capital of the Emirate of Ajman has a population of 235,000 and is growing at a rate of 8% annually. During the construction of the plant and 230 km sewerage network, Veolia is tracking the progress of and accepting the work on behalf of the contractor, the Ajman Sewerage Private Company Limited. The wastewater treatment plant will be able to treat 90,000 cubic metres per day. The first customers will be connected in 2007, completion of the facilities being scheduled for 2009. Through its subsidiary Moalajah, two-thirds of which it owns, Veolia will be responsible for operating and maintaining the facilities as they start up, plus customer billing and consolidation.
